Born in 1842, Gustav Igler was a genre painter who began his formal training in Vienna 1858 under Ferdinand Waldmueller (Austrian 1793-1861) before settling in Munich ten years later.

In 1888, he was called to the Academy in Stuttgart to become the Principal of technical painting.  Upon retiring in 1914, Igler returned to Munich.

Gustav Igler was born May 15, 1842 in Odenburg, Austria-Hungary. From 1858, he studied under Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller in Vienna. He then studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Arthur von Ramberg from October 24, 1868 to 1871. In 1888, Igler was appointed head of the technical painting class at the Royal School of Art in Stuttgart. In 1896 he headed the II. International Painting Exhibition in Stuttgart. He spent most of the summer months in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Upon retiring in 1914, he returned to Munich. His body of work most commonly depict genre scenes of children at play. His work can be found in numerous private collections in America and Europe, as well as three works held at the Stuttgart Museum of Art.
