Chalon was a prominent sporting, equestrian, and animal painter, serving as Animal Painter first to Federica, Duchess of York (1767-1820) in 1795, and later to the Prince Regent (1762-1830) and King William IV (1765-1837). The present work is typical of Chalon's animal portraits, with a very similar painting selling at Phillips, New York, on 20 January 1998 (lot 267) for $4,500.
