1870  In the 1870 federal census of Oxford, Oxford County, Maine, Henry W. Rice , age 17, was working in his father's carriage shop.

1880  By 1880, Henry W. Rice had married Cora C. Downs and they were residing at  Hammond Street in Boston. Henry's occupation was  listed as a carriage painter on the 1880 federal census and his mother-in-law, Mary E. Downs, age 52,  was enumerated at his home.  At this time, Henry S. Rice was also residing in Boston and was employed  as a carriage painter.
