Homer Dean Boss

Homer Dean Boss (1882 - 1956) was active/lived in New Mexico, New York, Massachusetts.  Homer Boss is known for Western, Indian portrait and landscape painting.

Homer Boss (1882-1956)

Born in Blandford, Massachusetts, Homer Boss was a much praised painter in the early 20th century.  Although many of his earliest works were full length portraits in dark voids that brought favorable recognition, after participating in the 1913 Armory Show he became known for breaking away from 19th century academic standards.  After visiting New Mexico in the mid 1920s. his painting concentrated on portraits of its Indians and the region’s colorful landscapes.

Boss studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri in the New York (Chase) School of Art and learned the principles of anatomy from Thomas Anschutz who would come to New York from the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts to present classes.  As part of  “The Fifteen”, a group of Henri’s students including Edward Hopper and George Bellows who rebelled against the National Academy’s strictures, Boss was instrumental in organizing exhibitions of their work.  His paint   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 7965 characters.]  Artist bio
