James Duncan ARCA (1806 - 1881)

An important early Canadian, painter, printmaker, draftsman, illustrator, photographer and educator, James Duncan was born in Coleraine, Ireland; immigrated to Lower Canada (now Quebec) in 1825; and died in Montreal, Quebec, where he had been living since about 1830. His life and work are illustrated and discussed in numerous Canadian art history books, dozens of his paintings and prints are in Canadian museums, and his painting "Montreal from the Mountain" was exhibited in the National Gallery of Canada's 1967 Canadian centennial exhibition "Three Hundred Years of Canadian Art". His most well-known subjects were scenes of Montreal; he also painted portraits, landscapes, maps, waterfalls, Indians, interiors, historic events, current events and genre*. His mediums included watercolor, pastel, gouache*, oil, ink, pencil, miniature on ivory, lithography*, wood engraving*, etching* and silhouette*.
