James Owen Mahoney

James Owen Mahoney (1907 - 1987) was active/lived in New York.  James Mahoney is known for Surrealist, precisionist painting, architecture, and genre scenes.

Born in Dallas, Texas, James Mahoney was a canvas painter and muralist who was a professor of art at Cornell University for many years beginning 1954. From 1963 to 1968, he chaired the Art Department.

He studied at Southern Methodist University, earning a B.A. in 1929, and at Yale University where he earned a B.F.A. in 1932. From 1932 to 1935, he studied at the American Academy in Rome on a Prix de Rome scholarship.

Mahoney filled mural commissions in Dallas, Texas including the Centennial Exposition, the Federal Building, the Community Building, and the Adolphus Hotel. He completed an altarpiece at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase Maryland.
