A painter, sculptor, draftsman, illustrator, performance artist, conceptual artist and educator, Jean Benoit was born in Quebec City, Canada and died in Paris, France, where he had been living since 1948. His mediums were oil, wax crayon, pencil, leather, walking sticks, jewellery, bronze, wood, costumes, found objects, exquisite corpse*, livre d'artiste* and mixed mediums. His subjects were sex, eroticism, dreams, fantasy, horror, mythology, humor and social commentary. His style was Surrealism*.

According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* there are works by Jean Benoit in the permanent collections of the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art (Quebec), the Quebec Museum of Fine Arts (Quebec City), and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).
