Jean Meisel

Jean M. Meisel (Born 1931) is active/lives in New York, Maryland.  Jean Meisel is known for Seascape, still life, figurative, abstract geometric painting.

Jean Meisel was born Jean Marshall in 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA and spent most of her youth near Buffalo in Snyder, NY.  After graduating from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1953, she moved to New York City where she worked in the editorial department of Doubleday publishers in New York City.  She married Albert Meisel in 1955 and had three sons.  In 1958, they moved to Washington DC.  She spent time at The Phillips Collection looking especially at paintings of Nicolas de Stael, Milton Avery, Albert Ryder and Arthur Dove, and began painting in the kitchen of her Georgetown apartment.  In 1966, with three growing sons and her husband working at the Peace Corps, the Meisels moved to an old farmhouse in Chevy Chase, MD where Jean had a studio in the attic and later in the renovated carriage house.
