John Bannon - 1932-2017

On January 17, 1932, John Edward Bannon was born in Baltimore. He was the eldest of four children (Margaret, Mary, Barbara) born to Clara, nee Filling, and Edward. His father was the vice-president and part owner of the Monumental Iron and Metal Company. The family resided in the Irvington neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore City. The day at the monastery began at 2 AM and ended at 7 PM. Their daily routine consisted of 4-6 hours of manual labor. The rest of the day was spent in prayer and study.

It became evident to both John and his superiors that he was not cut out for monastery life. The inability to find an outlet for his artistic talents and poor health resulted in John’s being asked to leave the order. After ten months, John returned to the Institute to finish his degree and resume painting. He won the Henry Walters’ award of his graduating class at the Institute where he acquired a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree, and a Master in Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

John opened an art studio on East Mulberry Street, Baltimore. He became a great success story. He had exhibited in more than 25 galleries and presented over 36 solo exhibits throughout his career. In later years, John spent his career as an art professor at Northern Virginia Community College. He continued to produce his artwork and teach privately at his home studio well into his retirement.

On November 4, 2017, John passed away peacefully in Fairfax, Virginia. He was survived by his wife of 32 years, Lorna, a son, Ryan Bannon, and a sister, Barbara "Dolly" Blake. He was also survived by his grandchildren, Grayson and Laila Bannon. Rest in peace.
