John Goodwin Lyman was an important Canadian painter, draughtsman, art critic, art theorist, educator and leader in the art community.  Hundreds of his works are in the permanent collections of Canadian museums.  However, his major role in the development of Canadian art in the 20th century was as a bulwark against what he viewed as its isolationism.  Lyman was a key catalyst advocating the School of Paris* and the internationalization of Canadian art.  Given his background, he was the perfect person for the job .
