John Karl (Jack) Kershaw

John Karl (Jack) Kershaw (1913 - 2010) was active/lived in Tennessee, Missouri.  John Kershaw is known for Sculpture, easel and mural painting, drawing, commercial art.

Born in 1913 in Missouri, John Karl "Jack" Kershaw moved to Nashville with his parents as a child. He studied art at Vanderbilt University and in the 1920s became associated with a group of intellectuals who called themselves The Fugitive Poets, including John Crowe Ransom, William Ridley Wills, Robert Penn Warren, Andrew Lytle and Laura Riding.

In the 1930s, he worked as Federal director of the Tennessee Art Project (a job in which he worked as one of William Edmondson's supervisors; he also introduced Edmondson to one of his earliest supporters, Myron King of Lyzon Art Gallery) and was in charge of plates and research for another Federal art project, the National Index of Design, in Middle Tennessee.  He also served as an art consultant for The Kenyon Review and for Nashville Mayor Ben West, and was a member of the first Tennessee Arts Commission.  His work prior to 1950 consisted mostly of portraits (both paintings and sculptures), and paintings of landscape   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 3321 characters.]  Artist bio
