John Philamon Backhouse

John Philamon Backhouse (1845 - 1905) was active/lived in New Zealand.  John Backhouse is known for Oil paintings, pencil, wash, and watercolour sketches.

John Philamon (J.P.) Backhouse was a New Zealand artist born in Ipswich, England in 1845. He moved to the Auckland district by 1865, and married Sarah Elizabeth Philip in Onehunga on March 4, 1865.

Backhouse served in the Armed Constabulary and created oil paintings of the thermal region and pencil, wash, and watercolour sketches of the Onehunga area and other parts of Auckland. By the 1890s, he was a full-time artist and sketched scenes of New Zealand and Australia, as well as making studies of birds and insects.

Some of the paintings Backhouse sold were on shells or on small postcard-sized board. He was listed in Wises Trades Directory as an artist from 1896-1897 with an address on Newton Road in Auckland. Backhouse died in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay on October 6, 1908, and was buried there.
