Joseph Yang

Joseph Yang (Born 1928) is active/lives in California.  Joseph Yang is known for Expressionist landscape, sculpture.

Joseph Yang was born on Christmas Day, 1928, in Manchuria. He began painting as a youth and as a boy witnessed the Japanese inivasion of China and the civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists. His family - the House of Yang - was scattered by the turmoil, and he walked out of the country beginning on a May morning in 1947. His epic 2000-mile journey would eventually inspire the acclaimed 1994 book ``Baba: A Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders,'' by his daughter, Belle Yang, and the sequel two years later, ``The Odyssey of a Manchurian.''

``It was a disaster,'' Yang told the Monterey County Herald in 1991. ``My family was like a big tree that couldn't stand the storm and fell. In a year and a half the whole family was ruined.''

In Taiwan Yang met his wife Laning. He earned his M.A. in Chinese history and international relations in 1966 at Meiji University, Japan, and in 1967 the Yangs, with their daughter Belle, arrived in San Francisco. In   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1896 characters.]  Artist bio
