Marjorie Helen Thomas

Marjorie Helen Thomas (1885 - 1978) was active/lived in Arizona, Massachusetts.  Marjorie Thomas is known for Indian genre, animal and desert scene painting, illustration.

Born in Newton Center, Massachusetts, Marjorie Thomas became a homesteader in Arizona, calling herself an "artistic pioneer" because of her devotion to recording the changing life and landscape in the Salt River Valley.

She grew up in the Boston area and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where she was a student of Edmund Tarbell, Philip Hale, and Frank Benson.  She also studied with Louis Kronberg and John Palmer Wicker.  She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1924 and 1928.

In 1909, she moved to Arizona with her mother for her brother's health, and settled in Paradise Valley, adjacent to Scottsdale, and she, her mother and brother each homesteaded 160 acres.  She, with little agricultural background, quickly adapted.  Her brother died in 1915, but she continued to live in the area, maintaining a home on one acre for many years.  Eventually she moved into Scottsdale and spent her summers in Massach   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 2532 characters.]  Artist bio
