Artist Biography & Facts
Mary Bromley

As a youth sketched the Native American Petroglyphs at Painted Rock, Carrizo Plains, 1870s. One of two daughters of the first white family to live at Painted Rock Ranch, Carrizo Plains. The two girls realized the painted cave was special. Nellie Bromley recalled how her sister spent hours in the cave copying the pictures, using lead pencil and scratch pad. “Mary would sketch while I kept her company. Sometimes I would go horseback riding around the Rock where I would find fossilized oysters as big as a man’s shoe, but most of the time I sat and watched Mary sketch. I loved to sit on a ledge above the opening.” “Nellie had carefully preserved the sketches of the Petroglyphs her sister had copied from the Painted Rock, and in 1950 presented them to the Archaeological Department of the University of California,” per Pauline Bradley Dubin, “Nellie Bromley of Painted Rock,” LaVista, v. 4, no.1, June 1980, pp. 9-14.Nancy Dustin Wall Moure, ATASCADERO (including CAMP ROBERTS, CARRIZA/O PLAINS, PASO ROBLES, SAN MIGUEL, SANTA MARGARITA, SHANDON, TEMPLETON, ETC.), ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY BEFORE 1960 (Publications in [Southern] California Art, vol. 13, no.
