Otto Illies

Otto Illies (1881 - 1959) was active/lived in Germany, Japan.  Otto Illies is known for Painting.

Otto Illies was born on January 25, 1881 in Yokohama, Japan and died on February 22, 1959 in Wernigerode, Harz.  Illies was a German painter, graphic artist and the nephew of Arthur Illies.  He attended school in Hamburg.  In 1898 he lived in an apartment in his parents' house on the Falkenstein on the Elbe.  In 1898-99 he took painting lessons with Georg Burmester in Kiel and in 1900 in Hamburg he studied under Ernst Eitner at the art school.

He then went to Munich in 1901, where he studied at the University of Art History and History.  In 1902-03 he undertook nude studies with Heinrich Knirr.  In 1904-1908 he attended the art school in Weimar, together with Ivo Hauptmann, as a master student of Prof. Ludwig von Hofmann, with whom he struck up a friendship. In 1908-10 he was a part of Atelier community with the painter Hans Delbruck in Berlin.
