Wilson was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art as well as in London and Antwerp. He travelled widely, working in America, India, Persia, Russia and Europe.

He became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors (1887) and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), The Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolors and the Royal Scottish Academy.
