Rune Mields was born in 1935 in Münster and worked there as book seller before she moved to Cologne in 1972. Since the late 1960s, she has been working as a visual artist.  Since 1984, she has been a visiting professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin.

Mields' work is determined by the relationship of numbers and characters as well as the concept of infinity.  The examination of sciences of diverse backgrounds, myths, philosophy and religions are often implemented in her large-scale paintings, cycles and series.
