Beckford Young

Beckford Young (1905 - 1979) was active/lived in California.  Beckford Young is known for Painter, mural painter.

Born in Petaluma, CA on Oct. 23, 1905.  Young was a star athlete at Petaluma High School.  He attended UC Berkeley on a sport scholarship, and, while recuperating from an ankle injury, began
majoring in art.  He then studied in Munich with Hans Hofmann and in Italy with Vaclav Vytlacil.  After four years in Europe, he returned to the San Francisco Bay area.  He was married briefly in the 1930s to artist Janet Todd Young.  He painted murals for the Federal Art Project in the 1930s and later served as their art director for northern California.  Young was a resident of El Cerrito until his death
in Berkeley on Sept. 17, 1979.  His early representational works later evolved into abstracts.
