Henry Collins Flagg

Henry Collins Flagg (1812 - 1862) was active/lived in Connecticut.  Henry Flagg is known for Marine, coastal view, animal, caricature.

Born in 1811 in New Haven, Connecticut, Henry Flagg became known for his marine and animal paintings and for his caricatures. He was the eldest son of Mayor Flagg of New Haven and had two artist brothers, George and Jared. He spent part of his childhood in South Carolina, and from 1827 to 1832, served in the U.S. Navy. Returning to New Haven, he became a marine painter and often exhibited pictures at East Coast venues including the Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design. Many of his works taken from sketches he made while on tours of duty including to South America where his travels to Peru inspired the 1837 painting, "Peruvians, with a View Near Lima'.

After spending some years as a professional painter, Henry Flagg re-joined the Navy. He died in 1862 in Jamestown, New York, shortly after achieving the rank of Commander.
