JOHN EVERS JR. (August 17, 1797 – May 3, 1884)

Landscape, miniature, and panoramic and theatrical scene painter.  Born in Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York, the son of John Evers Sr.  His father was one of a group of men who introduced the earliest hunt club – known first as the ‘Gentlemen’s Winter Club’ and later as the ‘St. George’s Hunt Club’ (of which George Washington was a subscriber) – to New York City and was among the first to bring the accoutrements of the English hunt to Long Island.

Though born on Long Island – purportedly in the same home that his mother had been born in decades earlier – by 1804 John Evers Jr. moved with his family to New York City.  The family was well-to-do, residing in the East Ward of Manhattan Island where they were among the slave owning families of   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 14666 characters.]  Artist bio
