Marie Lokke

Marie (Mathieson) Lokke (1877 - 1948) was active/lived in Illinois, Massachusetts / Norway.  Marie Lokke is known for Child portrait, landscape, genre and figure painting.

Born in Christiana (now Oslo), Norway, Marie Lokke studied in Europe, principally in Oslo and in Dresden, Germany, before emigrating to the United States.

Best known for her colorful impressionist landscapes in oil, she settled in Chicago, Illinois, from 1900-1921, but also gave her address in 1916 as Provincetown, Massachusetts, where Charles Hawthorne had established his Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 and directed it until 1930.

Lokke painted in other well-known artists' colonies of that era too, including in the Catskills near Woodstock, New York, in Connecticut, and on Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine, plus along the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan, and possibly at Carmel, California.

Lokke exhibited at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Expo in San Francisco, California, at the Art Institute of Chicago 1902-1915, and was an active member of the Chicago Society of Artists.
