Peter Sr Maverick

Peter Sr Maverick (1780 - 1831) was active/lived in New York.  Peter Maverick is known for Engraver, lithographer.

Peter Maverick was a printmaker, born in New York City in 1780. He learned his trade in his father's shop. Maverick established his own business in 1802, and in 1809 moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he remained until 1820, returning to New York City.

Asher B. Durand, painter and engraver, was his partner from 1817 to 1820. In the course of his career, Maverick engraved or lithographed about 1500 bookplates, maps, bank notes, and book and magazine illustrations. He was among our first lithographers, using the process as early as 1824 for the plates for the "Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York" (Bass Otis is supposed to have made the first lithograph in 1819).

Maverick engraved portraits of Henry Clay (1822, copy in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia) and DeWitt Clinton (circa 1831, New York Public Library, New York City).
