Zimmer was a German painter and sculptor.  From 1956-1957, he studied at der Hochschule Academy of Arts in Hamburg bildene.  From 1957-1960, Zimmer went to Glette and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

In 1958, he was co-founder of the artist group SPUR. In 1982, he received an appointment as professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig.
