Octave Morillot (1878 - 1931) was active/lived in France. Octave Morillot is known for Painting.
Octave Morillot was born in 1878 in the Marne region of France, and entered the Ecole Navale in 1898. After several naval campaigns, he embarked on the Durance for the Pacific in the company of Victor Segalen. With Segalen, he took part in the repatriation of Gauguin's works, which were sold in Papeete. Fallen in love with Polynesia, Morillot asked for unpaid leave and settled permanently on the island of Tahaa, cultivating nearly 3,000 hectares of coconut and cotton trees, giving free rein to his painting and opiate reveries. The painter exhibited during his lifetime, notably in 1911 and 1913 at the Salon des Orientalistes, in 1922 at the Marseille Colonial Exhibition and at the Galerie Barbazangues, in 1925 at the Decorative Arts Exhibition and in 1928 at the Galerie Girard. After his death, he was honored at the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, followed by the Musée de Colonies in 1936, the 1st Tahiti Salon in 1955, and retrospectives at Galerie Winkler in 1964 and 1989.
