Paul Mak, known primarily as a Persian miniaturist and portrait painter, was born with the name of Pavel Petrovich Ivanov in 1891 into a noble Russian military family. When he was only 20, he painted caricatures of famous artists such as F. Chaliapin, Anna Pavlova, V. Nijinski, and Serge Rachmaninov to name a few; they all attended a famous artist club in Moscow. 

He provide illustrations for such magazines’as Satyricon and other journals for two years and signed his work as a pseudonym, Mak, or P. Mak. In 1912 he studied painting at the Iouon Academy. In 1914 he attended the Kiev Military Academy.

In 1916 he went to war as an officer and was wounded several times. He was hospitalized for six months in 1917, with a fractured upper part of the leg; he was saved from amputation, but his left leg was twelve centimetres shorter.
