Pierre Tetar Van Elven

Pierre Tetar Van Elven (1828 - 1908) was active/lived in Netherlands, France.  Pierre Tetar Van Elven is known for Watercolor and oil genre and urban scene painting.

The son and student of Jean-Baptiste Tetar van Elven, Pierre Tetar Van Elven studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam and then at the Academy of Art in The Hague.

He moved to Paris in 1856 where he painted watercolors, as well as a variety of subjects in oil.  He was particularly accomplished in genre scenes, and urban landscapes.

In 1858 Van Elven left for Italy where he lived in Rome as a painter at the court of Victor Emmanuel II.  During this period he also visited and painted in the Near East, Palestine, North Africa and India.  It was through these travels that he added Orientalist themes to his painting oeuvre.

In 1861 he returned to France where he settled.  He exhibited there, as well as in Amsterdam, The Hague and the Royal Academy in London.  In 1868, he sold his canvas Evening at the Tuileries to the French Emperor.
