Rui Sanches

Rui Sanches (Born 1954) is active/lives in Portugal.  Rui Sanches is known for Postmodernist sculpture using industrial materials and referencing art history.

Rui Sanches is a Portuguese sculptor born in Lisbon in 1954. He dropped out of medical school in 1974 to attend art courses at Ar. Co. In 1977, he moved to London to study at Goldsmiths' College and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Yale University. Sanches' work often uses industrial materials and references art history, particularly the paintings of David and Poussin. In the 1990s, he began creating sculptures using layers of wood extracts, with each layer serving as a mold for the next. Sanches also served as assistant director at the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Center from 1994 to 1998.
