Ann Sophia (Towne) Darrah (1819 - 1881) was active/lived in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania.  Ann Darrah is known for Landscape, marine, and still life painting.

Ann Sophia Towne Darrah had a long career as an artist that included the creation of pastel portraits, landscapes, and marine views.  Born in Philadelphia, Sophia Towne Darrah was the daughter of John Towne.  Her father endowed the Towne Scientific School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1876, and was also a prominent collector of modern art, and so young Sophia grew up surrounded by paintings.

Sophia loved music and played the harp, but in 1845, when she married Robert K. Darrah of Boston, her interest in music shifted to painting.  In 1849, she became a pupil of the painter Paul Weber.  She also traveled to Europe to further study the art of the great masters.  Interested above all in painting landscapes and seascapes, Darrah was a proponent of plein-air painting.  She was one of the many artists who painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and her Mount Washington is an example of her work there.
