A portrait and landscape painter, Bena Mayer, also known as Bena Frank, was active in New York City as an artist and participant in numerous art-related organizations as well as prestigious exhibition venues.  Her husband was Ralph Mayer, who wrote A Dictionary of Art Terms and Techniques and The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques.

She was a student at Cooper Union, Hunter College and the Art Students League, and among her teachers were Kenneth Hayes Miller, Gifford Beal, Cecilia Beaux, George Luks and Stuart Davis. 

Her memberships included the Art Students League, the Brooklyn Society of Artists, National Association of Women Artists and the New York Society of Women Artists, which she served as President in 1952-1953 and as Director.

She exhibited with the Southern States League, Carnegie Institute, Salons of America and many more.
