Cris Cruz, most famous for his floral watercolors, was born in Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines. Cruz took up BFA advertising in the University of the Philippines in 1957.

He is an advertising first batcher under teachers Dominador Castaneda, Ireneo Miranda, and Dr. Toribio Herrera; as well as sculptors Ambrosia Morales and Anastacio Caedo.

Flor Agbayani, his professor in his painting class, was amazed by his ability in medium. He was classmates with another legend, Manansala, in UP School of Fine Arts during 1932. He was also an art director at Well advertising. He was able to put up a printing press for several years until 1979, when he decided to paint seriously.
