Harrison Rucker studied art at Richmond Professional Institute and Cleveland Institute of Art. He began his career in commercial art as an illustrator and founded High Point's first advertising art studio.

He was the first president of the Art Directors Club of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston Salem, made up of advertising agency art directors and associates.

Rucker began painting full time at age 39. He had 27 one-man shows, exhibiting in New York, Carmel, California, Naples, Florida, and many other galleries throughout the nation.
