Helen has won many awards for work in both oil and pastel. She was selected as one of America's leading one hundred portrait artists from over ten thousand entries by Artist Magazine in 1989. She has been a student of portraiture all of her life by attending art seminars and visiting art museums around the world.

After graduating from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education, Helen taught in the Ohio public school system for four years. As she married and had her children, Helen continued her portrait training and used her children as models. She further practiced the art of portraiture by doing pastel sketches and paintings, for customers at Marshall Fields, Madigans, and the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort.
