A resident of Portland, Oregon from 1921, he was an abstract figurative painter who enrolled at the Museum Art School in 1937 and after further study in New York, returned to Portland to teach and paint.

His work has been described as having a "frightful gaiety," some of suggestive of experiences he had on his many trips to Mexico.
