The Flemish painter Jasper van der Lanen is precisely known for his wooded landscapes with figures depicting mythological or biblical stories or pastoral scenes. His work was only rediscovered in the middle of the 20th century.

The discovery of additional signed works has led to a better understanding of the artist's style. As a result, more works have been attributed to him, which had previously been attributed to other painters with whom he shared a similar approach to landscape painting, such as his contemporary Jan Brueghel the Younger.

As was common in Antwerp artistic practice at the time, van der Lanen collaborated with specialist figure painters who added the figures to his landscapes. The painter Frans Francken the Younger often added the figures in his works, as did Hans Jordaens III.
