He initially worked on performances and installations with Peter Lloyd-Jones, but later focused on painting. Upton's paintings were known for their pastel-heavy palette and captured both rural and urban landscapes. He had solo exhibitions in London and New York and was part of group exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Hayward Gallery in London and the National Museum in Madrid.
