Norman Kanter (1926-2010) was a New York based painter and pioneer of the Tribeca neighborhood, where he lived on Chambers Street from 1960 until his death. Born in West Virginia, Kanter took his degree from Berkeley University in 1956 after earlier studies in Chicago at the Institute of Design.

Even though Kanter migrated to New York he maintained his Bay Area ties returning often to take visiting teaching positions at Berkeley and in Oakland at the Oakland Museum and the College of Arts and Crafts.

He exhibited in San Francisco at the Dilexi Gallery. In New York he taught at Alfred, Pratt, and NYC Technical College. His gallery associations in New York included Martha Jackson, Forum and Area Gallery, which he helped to found in 1959 at 80 E. 10th St.

During his career Kanter received awards including a Fulbright in 1956 for study in Paris, an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant and a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant.
