Pol Cassel was born in 1892 in Munich. From 1921 the house at the quarry above the Elbe played a central role in Pol Cassel's universe, because it offered him the opportunity to live his philosophy and worldview from a direct experience of nature. Cassel had set it up in the former blacksmith's house of a disused quarry near the Saxon town of Wehlen. It was in this idyll that he developed his magical realism, which helped him achieve his artistic breakthrough between 1924 and 1925. His painting received recognition for "the thoroughly personal way that is artistically strong and peculiar to perceive and process. In any case, there is nothing conventional about this art.
