Sally Merriman Biography

Sally M. Merriman (1917-1982), one of Oregon’s foremost expressionist landscape painters of the 1960s and 1970s, was born on November 12, 1917 in Battle Creek, Michigan to John A. and Esther A. Mustard. In 1935, she attended Rockford College in Illinois, at the time a women’s college.

From 1937 to 1940 she studied at the University of Michigan, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design from the University’s College of Architecture and Design. She additionally studied anatomy at the University of Michigan Medical School. Prior to her arrival in Ann Arbor, the Battle Creek Enquirer noted that she “. . . will continue her study of art in which she has shown marked talent in recent years.”

She rounded out her education in the arts at the Cranbrook Academy of the Arts. Returning home, she opened an art studio in Battle Creek. She soon gained prominence as an in-demand portrait painter. She married Robert Merriman in 1942; they   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 3047 characters.]  Artist bio
