An original member of Josephine (Mrs. Charles) Catlin’s 1877 sketch class in Omaha, Selma Balcombe, age 20, was part of what appears to have been the earliest formalized art education group of white settlers in Nebraska. The degree of Selma’s interest, talent and attendance record seems unrecorded, but the fact she committed to spending several hours, two evenings a week, October through May, for two years indicates serious dedication to drawing and critiquing.
Common threads among sketch class members included fine art self-improvement goals in a communal, secure-seeming setting because they were socially among persons of their ‘own kind,’ meaning upper-class in early Omaha. With this as criteria, Selma Balcombe certainly qualified as her parents Anna and Saint Andre Durand Balcombe, had been in Nebraska since 1865 when they brought their five children ...
