UngNo Lee

UngNo Lee (1904 - 1989) was active/lived in France, South Korea.  UngNo Lee is known for Painting.

Ungno Lee initially established himself primarily in South Korea, where he is considered an important artist of the 20th century. In 1945 he founded GO AM in Seoul, an institution for painting, where he taught sumi-é, a special technique of ink drawing with predominantly landscape motifs.  Three years later, he became the director of Eastern Painting Studies at Hongik University.  After a long stay in Paris in 1956, he finally settled in the French metropolis in 1959.

In search of his family members, now domiciled in North Korea, he returned to his homeland in 1967 after a stay in East Berlin, whereupon he was accused of espionage and imprisoned. Thanks to international engagement, he escaped a prison sentence and moved to Paris again in 1970.
