In preparing manuscript records for our catalog . . . I thought I'd share the data I'd come up with while cataloging a letter he [Merriam] had written to John Ruskin. Feel free to use all, none, or part of the data, as you see fit. Note that I was not able to examine Mifflin's paintings.

Lloyd Mifflin was born September 15, 1846, into an affluent family in
Columbia, Pennsylvania. His father, John Houston Mifflin, had trained as a portrait painter and studied in Europe, but gave up painting to tend to his ailing wife.

In his youth, Lloyd developed a love of painting through his father, and
came to revere the Pennsylvania countryside near his home. He received his
initial training in art from his father, and later studied with Thomas
Moran in 1869-1870, where he developed an appreciation for the landscapes
of both Moran and J.M.W. Turner.
