Lawrence Gipe was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 and lives in Santa Barbara, California. He began his career in Los Angeles with a series of exhibitions addressing the themes of industrialization and progress. These shows, filled with large-scaled paintings of factories and steaming locomotives, led to solo exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Chigago as well as Munich, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, and Berlin.

Gipe's work is collected by individuals and institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. A traveling mid-career survey, "3 Five-Year Plans: Lawrence Gipe 1990-2005", is currently being organized by Marilyn Zeitlin at the University Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona.

Last November, Gipe had his 9th solo exhibition in New York. He recently completed a mural commission for the lobby of the Federal Reserve Bank Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia in a building designed by Robert A.A. Stern.
