Mildred Valley Stinson Thornton

Mildred Valley Stinson Thornton (1890 - 1967) was active/lived in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario / Canada, England.  Mildred Thornton is known for Native Canadian portrait, coastal and mountain landscape painting.

Mildred Valley Thornton, (née Stinson) was born in Dresden, Ontario.  She studied at Olivet College, Michigan (1910); under J. W. Beatty [see AskART] and George Reid [see AskART] at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto (1910); and at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (1910).

Working in oil and watercolour, she is known for her bold colourful native portraits, and prairie and west coast landscape with mountains and coastal scenes.  Her subjects include native ceremonies and culture, totem poles, and native encampments.

She painted the Cree, Assiniboine, Blackfoot, Blood, Piegan, Sarcee, Sioux, Stoney and Saulteaux on reserves in Saskatchewan; and the Haida, Tsimshian, Salish, Kwakiutl and Shuswap in British Columbia.

She wrote two books which combined her native portraits with her personal experiences Indian Lives and Legends (1966) and Buffalo People: Portraits of a Vanishing Nation (2000).
