Arizona Cowboy artist Curt Mattson trained under Mehl Lawson and Pat Haptonstall to learn the art of sculpture. He has worked as a horse trainer and ranch hand since high school where he learned all about horses and western genre.

Mattson was awarded the Phippen Family Award, the Best of Show and the Sculpture Award at the 2005 Phippen Museum Western Art Show in Prescott, Arizona.
