Alexandre Gabriel Decamps

Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803 - 1860) was active/lived in France, United States.  Alexandre Decamps is known for Figure, landscape, history and genre painting, Orientalism.

French painter, draughtsman, watercolorist and engraver of history, typical scenes and genre born in Paris, he is one of the most brilliant representatives of the Orientalist and Romantic School of his time. He trained in the workshop of Etienne Brouhot and perfected his skills at Abel de Pujol's while practicing at the Louvre at the School of the great Flemish masters, but especially Rembrandt. Attracted very early by oriental subjects, Decamps was sent on a mission to Greece with the painter Garneray, in charge of representing the victory of Navarin.

He continued his journey to Constantinople, Asia Minor and the Middle East, which became a source of inspiration for him. He made his debut at the 1928 Salon, but it was in 1931 and even more so in 1934 that he definitively established his reputation as the "inventor of the Orient".
