Demas Nwoko

Demas Nwoko (Born 1935) is active/lives in Nigeria.  Demas Nwoko is known for Nigerian and African traditional aesthetics with a modernist sensibility.

Demas Nwoko was a Nigerian artist, teacher, theatre director, designer, and architect. He was a founding member of the Zaria Art Society, a student group at the Nigerian College of Art, Science and Technology, Zaria that became key players in the development of postcolonial modernism in Nigeria in the early 1960s. Nwoko's work was based on Nigerian and African traditional aesthetics, forms, and processes, but with a modernist sensibility similar to that of the European avant-garde. He was a friend of Professor Uche-Okeke, who theorized the idea of Natural Synthesis. In this 1965 painting, Nwoko presents an image reminiscent of the blind musician and entertainer Baba Kokoro, who was widely known in Lagos, Nigeria, for his unique style of singing accompanied by a drum or tambourine
