Helen Mary Knowlton

Helen Mary Knowlton (1832 - 1918) was active/lived in Massachusetts.  Helen Knowlton is known for Landscape, coastal view, portrait.

Born in Littleton, Massachusetts in 1832, she and other Boston women organized a painting class in 1868 taught by William Morris Hunt. The idea of a professional painting class for women was socially acceptable only because he was so respected. After three years, he put her in charge of the class, and in 1875, she wrote a book of his teaching methods, "Talks on Art." In 1879, she wrote a second book, which he illustrated. She lost many of her paintings in the Boston Fire of 1872 and then became an art critic for the "Boston Post." She painted in Europe with Ellen Day Hale and published a book of Hunt's life after his suicide.
