NARRATIVE?
This painting is a characteristic example of a still life by the rare Amsterdam painter Jan Fris. It depicts one of his favourite subjects – a still life of smoking requisites, or a toebackje, as they were called in seventeenth-century Holland. A broken brazier containing glowing coals, a metal tobacco box and a slender white clay pipe appear on a cracked stone ledge: a small pile of glowing ash has fallen from the bowl of the pipe onto the stone ledge. Also displayed are a pack of playing cards, a walnut and some broken nut shells: the seven of clubs and another card concealed beneath it lie face up at the front of the ledge.
