JEAN NEVITT FLANIGEN (1898-1994)

A native of Athens, Georgia, Jean Nevitt Flanigen studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under such influential teachers as Hugh Breckinridge, Daniel Garber, and Henry McCarter. Working in oils and watercolors, she was a member of the Philadelphia Water Color Club, Southern States Art League, and the Georgia Art Association, exhibiting at these organizations' annuals, as well as at the Washington D.C. Watercolor Club.

Flanigen served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps during World War II making maps in London. She was also able to paint in Paris during this period and at the war's conclusion. Returning to her hometown, she worked as an illustrator at the University of Georgia's extension service from 1949-1963. A founding member of the Athens Art Association, Flanigen was an enthusiastic proponent of the burgeoning art scene in that community.
